Good news, bad news for Missouri drivers

The good news for Hillsboro residents is that with a few taps on your phone, you can get a free ride and avoid a possible DWI arrest. The bad news is that the offer from Lyft will expire soon.

The ride-sharing company is teaming up with Budweiser to offer 150,000 round-trip weekend and holiday rides in 10 states. More good news: Missouri is one of the lucky states to be a part of the companies' "Give a Damn, Don't Drive Drunk" free-ride campaign to help drivers avoid accidents and drunken driving arrests.

This is the second time the two companies have made the offer to help people get home safely after they've been out enjoying the evening.

A free ride could save you a lot more than cab fare. If you were to be arrested for driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 percent or above, you face some harsh penalties.

For a first offense, potential penalties can include the following:

  • A minimum of 48 hours in jail (if you have a 0.15 percent to 0.2 percent BAC)
  • A minimum of five days in jail (with a BAC of more than 0.2 percent)
  • A maximum of six months in jail
  • A fine of up to $500

Punishments for multiple DWI convictions can include:

  • A minimum jail sentence of 10 days (for one prior drunk driving conviction)
  • A minimum jail sentence of 30 days (with two or more prior convictions)
  • A minimum jail sentence of 60 days (with three or more prior convictions)
  • A minimum jail sentence of two years (with four or more priors)

Missouri has some of the toughest drunken driving laws in the nation. If you have been charged with excessive blood alcohol content or driving while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs, speak with an experienced criminal defense attorney before you talk to a prosecutor.
