Workers' compensation: Worker killed at lumber company

All workplaces in Missouri and across the country hold some degree of risk of injury. Even workers who spend great deal of time at a desk can suffer repetitive motion injuries while those who work with heavy machinery could face more traumatic injuries. Because of this potential, employers are required to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage. Unfortunately, several agencies in another state are currently investigating a recent fatal accident.

The incident happened one morning on a day in December. According to reports, the 55-year-old victim was working at Guy Bennett Lumber Company. Officials say that the man was using a debarker machine at the time.

Unfortunately, it is believed that the man fell, causing him to injure his head. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene. The incident remains under investigation by multiple agencies, including the coroner's office, sheriff's department and the state's Labor and Industries department. If an investigation discovers that health or safety standards were violated in the events leading up to the fatal accident, the man's employer could face citations, fines or some combination of both.

Workplace accidents often leave workers suffering both physically and financially. Fortunately, workers' compensation insurance benefits can help victims of workplace accidents cover these expenses. In the event of a fatal accident such as this, these benefits can extend to certain surviving family members. To help understand the compensation process as well as to ensure a fair settlement, many people in Missouri choose to seek guidance with negotiating with insurance companies.
