Criminal defense: Murder charge follows officer shooting

When an officer is killed in the line of duty, there is an understandable demand for justice. Unfortunately, overzealousness on the part of law enforcement authorities could potentially result in misplaced blame. In fact, a woman in Missouri is now likely considering her criminal defense after she was charged with murder in the shooting death of an officer.

The incident appears to be the result of a mistake. Officers were reportedly mistakenly sent to the wrong address following a 911 call. When they arrived at the incorrect residence, officers encountered a 37-year-old woman who reported that she did not call 911 and that there was no disturbance at her home. Five police officers entered the home anyway to determine that no one was in danger. Once in side, they reportedly encountered an armed man who fired, injuring three officers.

By the time a SWAT team entered the residence, both the armed male and the officer were deceased. Police say that the woman admitted to helping the deceased man distribute drugs in exchange for assistance paying her bills. Originally facing charges of keeping or maintaining a public nuisance and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, an additional charge of second-degree murder has been added. Prosecutors argue that they filed the murder charge because they believed that the officer was killed as a result of the woman's alleged drug crimes.

Unfortunately, the Missouri woman is facing a confusing and stressful time. She is likely unprepared to make the legal decisions that will face her in the coming weeks and months. As a result, she may need to seek advice from an experienced criminal defense attorney who can help ensure that she has the information necessary to make informed decisions.
